Using Technology for Independence and Self-Expression
Technology in My Everyday Life
Most technology these days is very important for life. It can empower you even when things are very hard or difficult.
Having independence is very important to me and technology really helps with that. Technology helps me with my daily routines – my chores around the apartment like vacuuming, laundry, and cooking meals. I also use technology to read up on how to be safe with tools and safety while cooking.
Keeping Connected
I have a laptop, an iPad, and an iPhone that I regularly use. They help me keep in touch with my family and friends and allow me to share important messages. I use email to talk to family and friends and sometimes phone or Facetime or text messaging.
Staying Safe Online
I like using social media a lot. I mainly use Facebook. I try to always be very careful with what information I put on social media. I have learned to be safe online. First, I stop and think about what I post. I get my parents to read it to see if it is ok to post, to see if it is appropriate or not. When I’m online, I try to make sure I know the people well.
Technology for School and Work
I think technology is a great way to empower everyone who goes to school. I use my computer for school to write assignments and look things up. I do use technology to help me stay organized and remember things. I make sure to have things in my calendar, and I use my email to keep me on track with what I need to do.
I also use my computer for my work with CDSS to write my blogs and I am using it to write a book about my life. It helps me to get my ideas out and write them down. Technology helps me express who I am.
Challenges and Balance
Technology can sometimes make it hard to stay on track with certain things like my work. It can be a distraction and make me late for things like my sports. Technology is useful for work meetings, but it can sometimes be hard socially when you aren’t with people in person. I would like technology to continue to help me build relationships and help others to get to know me better.
Fun and Relaxation
I use technology to relax, too, like watching Hannah Montana on TV or listening to my music on my iPod. My favourite app is the Harry Potter walk-through game on my phone. I like to use YouTube to watch videos also.
Technology helps me with many of my hobbies. I use Zoom to do my vocal lessons online and I use technology when I perform my music at events. The Internet also helps me come up with ideas for woodworking. I really would like to learn how to make a banjo and other things like a new shoe rack or a drum set. I would also like to use technology to learn more about sports, like CFL and hockey news.
